soduim silica water glass

Sodium silicate water glass is used in a wide variety of applications from bleaching paper to surface coatings and tunnelling. It is a white solid which when immersed in water is soluble and once done produces an alkaline solution which when heated will form silica gel which you find in shoe boxes and where moisture needs to be taken out of the environment.

Sodium silicate is inorganic and therefore a great binder for building materials in particular insulation. Materials that are constantly subjected to moderately high temperatures will benefit from silicate as it can be hardened by a co reactant, or by drying, this forms a hard glass like solid which only starts to break down at temperatures over one thousand degrees celcius. Typical uses for panels produced from vermiculite, foamed clay, Perlite et cetera are protection for steel framework, fire doors, wall panels and ceiling tiles.

Sodium silica water glass is also used in clay and ceramics. The basic raw material for the manufacture of ceramic tiles, porcelain sanitary & decorative ware is clay. The dry clays must be converted to a slurry that is mobile but contains the smallest amount of water to achieve this state. The higher the water content the greater the cost of energy for its later removal and reject rates due to the formation of shrinkage cracks in the manufactured items. The addition of small amounts of sodium silicate deflocculates clays thereby reducing the water requirement to produce a mobile slip. Natural clays vary significantly in composition and it has been found that blends of polyacrylates and sodium silicate generally produce the flexibility required to deflocculates a wide variety most cost effectively.
