Ineos silicas are composed of silica hydrogel, a white, inert, odorless, amorphous powdered product produced by a reaction of high quality sodium silicate solution with mineral acid, under acidic conditions, to form a gel. The gel is washed to remove all trace impurities and classified to produce the final product. Examination of the silica structure under a microscope reveals a sponge like appearance. The sponge pores are uniform and of such a size to selectively adsorb the undesirable soap, phosphatides and trace metals in their hydrated form. During manufacture, process conditions are carefully controlled to produce these correct size pores, referred to as the average pore diameter, APS.
