What is silica gel Silica gel is a substance that is a desiccant which means that it is used to absorb water vapour. You will have seen the little sachets in the box of your new shoes that say do not eat on it, it is quite harmless and silicon dioxide is used in food but we recommend not eating it anyway, just in case. Leather shoes are porous and therefore will absorb condensation and this will ruin the shoes, the same with things like dried sausages which would spoil in damp environments. Silica will absorb around forty percent of it own weight, if you imagine the silica as sand with millions of minute holes in for absorption.
Silica gel was manufactured from sodium silicate at the turn of the century and was subsequently used in gas masks and in various other areas of the army to keep medical stocks and food stuffs dry, by absorbing the moisture and creating a protective dry air shield.
