Silicas are produced as a precipitate in the reaction between alkali metal silicate solutions and mineral acids under neutral or alkaline conditions. A wide range of silica products can be produced by altering various parameters of the reaction including temperature, pH, mixing energy and reactor geometry. Simply, to precipitate means to condense a solid during a chemical reaction.
INESOS have been in the industry since eighteen fifteen when Joseph Crosfield established his soap factory in Warrington, and although the business has changed hands over the years the factory has evolved but has remained on the same site. The company also continued to advance in its production of soap powders, including the well known Persil brand until, in nineteen sixty four, the whole of Crosfield’s soap operations were transferred to Lever Brothers and Crosfield became exclusively a chemicals business.
