Technical Reports and Papers

Development of an Improved Silica-Based Beer Stabilizer"

Tony Nock

Changes in domestic retailing and the growth in premium export beer markets, has led to the requirement for extended shelf life. This paper discusses the development of a new silica, capable of offering extremely effective beer stabilization and significantly extending shelf life.

"Advances in Silicas For Use in Beer Stabilization"

A Nock & I P McKeown

This paper discusses how the structure of silica particles can be tailored to meet a number of requirements of the brewer. Factors such as pore dimension, particle size distribution and level of hydration have been varied to produce a range of silicas which offer high performance beer stabilization with minimum capital investment.

"Selective Protein Adsorption with Silica Gel"

JE Guzman, IP McKeown, M Gleaves, GG Stewart, and A Doyle

This paper examines the selectivity of silica gels for haze-forming proteins in different beers.

"Improved Beer Stabilization Using Silica Adsorbents"

Anthony Nock and John Guzman

This paper demonstrates how the modification of silica gel properties can produce adsorbents materials which offer improved beer stabilization.

"Use of Filtration Grade Silicas to provide Combined Filtration and Beer Stabilization Benefits"

John Guzman and Tony Nock

This paper shows how silica hydrogels can be tailored to duplicate the permeability of conventional bodyfeed D.E.'s. Application of these Filtration Grade silicas (FG silicas) greatly reduces or even eliminates the use of bodyfeed D.E., while still providing the stability requirements of the brewer.

"The Use of ATP Bioluminescence for Microbiological Screening of Silica Products Used in the Brewing Industry"

John Guzman, GP Dumbill, D Murphy, and WE Whitby

Traditionally screening to demonstrate microbiological purity has been carried out using TVC (Total Variable Count), which takes a minimum of 3-4 days. This paper discusses an alternative method, called ATP bioluminescence, which takes only 26 hours to screen plant produced samples.

Lucilite TR Silica - a cost-effective alternative to PVPP.

Ian McKeown and Neil Thompson

This technical article, published in the Brewer International in 2003, shows the benefits and potential cost savings that can be achieved by the use of Lucilite TR.

"A Comparison of the Selective Removal of Beer Polyphenols by Lucilite TR and PVPP from All-Malt Lager"

Ian McKeown, M Thompson, and GG Stewart

This paper, published in the MBAA in 2003, shows the results of a comparison between Lucilite TR and PVPP for different loadings and contact times. The beers used were subjected to forced aging and evaluated for tannoid and sensitive protein content, total polyphenol content, and chill haze formation.
